Using a diary to enrich history is one of the most effective ways to bring life to the past. Dennis Flakes does that in retelling the story of the Philippine war for independence against the United States. Through the pen of Private John Henry Asendorf of the Tenth Pennsylvania Volunteers, we learn new things about the war, the tenacity of Filipino forces fighting for our freedom, and the quiet debates among American rank-and-file about U.S. imperial intentions in the Philippines.
